It happened during the late Bronze Age and the early Iron Age. This era began after the Indus Valley Civilisation ended. During this time, people wrote down the Vedas. The Vedas are special religious texts. They tell us many things about how people lived. These books are the main way we understand this past.

Life changed a lot as the years went by. At first, people lived in small tribes in the Punjab region. They were mostly pastoral people, which means they moved with animals. They lived in a society where men held most of the power. Around 1000 BCE, they began to move east. They reached the fertile Ganges Plain. They started using iron tools like axes and ploughs. These tools helped them clear thick forests. This allowed them to stay in one place and farm.

Groups of people moved into northwest India during this era. These people were called Indo-Aryans. They came from areas like the Sintashta culture. They traveled through places like modern-day Afghanistan. They brought their own religious traditions with them. One famous story is the Battle of the Ten Kings. This battle happened on the banks of the Ravi River. A leader named Sudas led the Bharata tribe. He won the fight against ten other tribes. After this, the Bharata and Puru tribes joined to form the Kuru kingdom.

It was the first real state in this period. Kings like Parikshit and Janamejaya helped it grow. They organized religious rituals and collected sacred hymns. During this time, a social system called varna appeared. This system divided people into four different groups. The first groups were priests and warriors. The next groups were farmers, traders, and workers. This structure helped organize their growing society.

By the end of the period, things were changing again. Large kingdoms called mahajanapadas began to rise. These states were much bigger than the old tribes. Trade and travel became very common between distant places. New ideas and religions like Buddhism and Jainism also started. These new movements challenged the old ways of the Vedas. The Vedic traditions eventually helped form what we call the Hindu synthesis. This era left a lasting mark on the culture of India.
