The Kuru kingdom was a very important group of people in northern India. It was formed when two tribes, the Bharata and the Puru, joined together. This happened during the Middle Vedic period, which was part of the Iron Age. The Kuru kingdom was the first recorded state-level society in the Indian subcontinent.

It covered parts of what we now call Haryana, Delhi, and western Uttar Pradesh. This land was rich with many rivers like the Sarasvatī and the Dṛṣadvatī. The kingdom was divided into different areas like the Kuru-kṣetra and the Kuru-jaṅgala forest.

Life in the Kuru kingdom changed as people moved into new areas. At first, many people were semi-nomadic and moved with their animals. Later, they began to stay in one place to farm rice and barley. They used a dark metal called iron to help with their work. Some small farming villages grew into larger towns. These towns were often protected by ditches or walls made of earth and wood.

Powerful kings led the Kuru people during their most successful years. Two famous kings were Parikshit and his son Janamejaya. Parikshit was praised as a great king of a wealthy land. Janamejaya was known as a conqueror who performed special rituals.

The kings did not rule alone. They had help from priests, army chiefs, and village headmen. They also had two groups to help make decisions. One was the Samiti, a council for all members. The other was the Sabhā, a group of wise elders who gave advice.

The Kuru people also changed how religion worked in India. They took sacred hymns and arranged them into collections called the Vedas. They developed new rituals known as Srauta rituals to keep order in society.

These religious changes helped create Brahmanism. This eventually grew into the religion we know today as Hinduism. This shift happened as the center of culture moved through different regions. It was a huge change for the religious heritage of the area.

Over time, the Kuru kingdom began to lose its power. They were defeated by a tribe called the Salva. This caused the center of culture to move east toward the Panchala Kingdom. The kingdom eventually split into many smaller states.

Even though the kingdom faded, its stories stayed very strong. Many of these stories are told in the famous epic called the Mahabharata. This epic includes the lives of the Kuru kings. The legends of the Kurus continue to be a part of history today.
