Panchala was a powerful kingdom in ancient northern India. It sat in a fertile area called the Ganges-Yamuna Doab. This land is near the modern city of Kannauj.

The kingdom was located west of the Gomti River. It was also north of the Chambal River. For a long time, it was a very important state. It was closely linked to the Kuru kingdom. By the 5th century BCE, it was a major state. People called these large states mahajanapadas.

Many different groups of people lived in this land. Some experts believe the name Panchala comes from the word for five. This might mean five tribes joined together to form the state. These tribes included the Krivis and the Turvashas. Other groups were the Keshins, the Srinjayas, and the Somakas.

These clans worked together to build a strong society. They even had famous leaders and princes. One famous ruler was a philosopher-king named Pravahana Jaivali. He lived during the 8th or 7th century BCE.

History tells us that the way Panchala was ruled changed. At first, it was ruled by kings. Later, it became an oligarchic confederacy. This means a group of people shared the power.

The kingdom was sometimes divided into two parts. Northern Panchala had a capital at Ahichchhatra. Southern Panchala had its capital at Kampilya. These cities were important centers for the people. The kingdom was later part of the Mauryan Empire. Later, it was taken by the Gupta Empire.

Stories from the Mahabharata also tell us about Panchala. King Drupada was a very famous ruler there. He was the father of Draupadi. Her husband was one of the Pandavas. Drupada also had two sons named Dhrishtadyumna and Shikhandi. They were known as great warriors.

Drupada fought in the Kurukshetra War to help the Pandavas. He even provided three large armies for the fight. These stories show how important the kingdom was in ancient legends.

We know much about Panchala from old objects. Archaeologists have found many round copper coins. These coins were made from a copper alloy. They often show the names of rulers like Agnimitra or Damagupta.

Some coins show images of gods like Agni. These coins help us track who ruled the land. The last known ruler of Ahichchhatra was a man named Achyuta. He was defeated by the ruler Samudragupta around 350 CE. This marked a big change for the old kingdom.
