She lived during the later Vedic period. Most experts believe she lived around the 8th century BCE. She is known as a brahmavadini. This term means a person who explains sacred texts. She is a symbol of intellectual women in India today.

Her life is described in several ancient books. In the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, she is the wife of a sage named Yajnavalkya. Another book, the Mahabharata, says she never married. The Mahabharata calls her a lifelong ascetic. An ascetic is someone who lives a very simple life. Some texts say she was the daughter of a sage named Maitri. Her father was a minister in the Mithila region. This area is in eastern India.

Many people study the famous talks between Maitreyi and Yajnavalkya. In one story, Yajnavalkya wanted to leave his family life. He wanted to become a sannyasi, or a person who gives up worldly things. He offered to divide his wealth between his wives. Maitreyi was not interested in his riches. She said wealth would not make her immortal. Instead, she asked to learn about immortality. This led to a deep conversation about the soul.

This conversation explores the idea of Atman and Brahman. Atman is the word for the soul or the self. Brahman is the word for the ultimate reality. Maitreyi studied how these two things are actually one. This way of thinking is called Advaita philosophy. She also spoke about the nature of love. She suggested that people love others because of their own souls. Even the gods are loved because of the soul.

Many scholars have looked at her story for a long time. Some say she shows that women could be great teachers in ancient times. Others study how she challenged her husband with smart questions. Famous scholars like Sureshvara wrote about their dialogue. Even the great scholar Adi Shankara wrote about these ideas. Today, her name lives on in important places. A college in New Delhi is named after her. There is also a retreat called the Matreyi Vedic Village in Tamil Nadu.
