He is best known as a teacher of Advaita Vedanta. This is a belief system that focuses on the nature of reality. Shankara taught that the individual self is actually one with the Supreme Being, called Brahman. He believed that true knowledge comes from understanding this deep connection. This idea helps people find liberation or freedom.

Shankara's teachings work by looking at the true identity of the self. He focused on the connection between the individual soul and the divine. He used the Upanishads, which are very old holy books, to explain his ideas. He believed that just hearing certain sacred truths could lead to right knowledge. This was different from other methods that required long periods of meditation. His goal was to show how all things are connected to one source.

Historians have different ideas about when Shankara actually lived. Most modern scholars believe he lived during the first half of the 8th century CE. However, some religious traditions place him much earlier, around the 5th century BCE. These traditions use different calendars to track his life. For example, one monastery says he was born in 509 BCE. Another says he was born in 483 BCE.

Shankara is credited with many important works and traditions. Some say he wrote over 300 different texts, including poetry and commentaries. Real scholars believe he definitely wrote the Brahmasutrabhasya and commentaries on ten Upanishads. He is also said to have founded four mathas, which are special monasteries. He helped organize the Dashanami monastic order for monks. He also introduced the Panchayatna way of worship. This way lets people worship five deities at once, such as Ganesha, Vishnu, and Shiva.

Today, Shankara is a very important figure in Hindu thought. While he was perhaps not famous during his own lifetime, his legend grew much later. In the 14th century, stories about his life became very popular. These stories describe him as a hero who traveled across India to teach. Many people still follow the traditions he helped shape. His name is even used as a title for leaders of certain monasteries today.
