He lived many centuries ago. Some traditions say he lived from 1017 to 1137. Other modern scholars believe he lived from 1077 to 1157. He was born in a village called Sriperumbudur. This village is in the state of Tamil Nadu. He grew up during the time of the Chola Empire.

Ramanuja spent much of his life studying holy books. He studied under a teacher named Yadava Prakasa. The two men often disagreed about what the books meant. Because of these differences, Ramanuja eventually began to study on his own. He later became a leader in the Sri Vaishnava tradition. He was even a priest at a temple in Kanchipuram.

One of his most famous ideas was called Vishishtadvaita. This is a way of thinking about the world and God. He taught that people could find spiritual freedom through bhakti. Bhakti means showing deep love and devotion to a personal god. In his case, he focused on the god Vishnu. He believed that souls are distinct but also connected to the ultimate reality.

Ramanuja was also known for being a social reformer. He wanted to change how people were treated in society. He fought against the unfair way people were divided into groups called castes. He called people who were treated poorly "Tirukulattar," which means "of noble descent." He helped many different groups of people join his faith. He even helped people enter temples in places like Melukote.

His life had many big moments and changes. He once had to leave the Chola kingdom to stay safe. He spent fourteen years living in the Hoysala kingdom. There, he helped build a temple for Lord Thirunarayanaswamy. Ramanuja's ideas were so strong that they changed how people worship. Even today, many people follow the paths he helped create. His work remains a major part of Indian history.
