The word svabhava is a very special term from ancient Indian thought. It literally means "own-being" or "own-becoming." This concept describes the essential nature or the inner essence of a living thing.

Thinkers use it to explore what makes something what it truly is. It is a big idea that helps people understand the core of existence. Many different traditions use this word to explain how the world works.

Different groups use svabhava in their own ways to explain reality. In some Hindu traditions, it is linked to the idea of Brahman. The text called Avadhuta Gita says Brahman is the svabhava. In the Samkhya philosophy, the term is connected to prakrti. This is seen as an independent and self-caused capacity.

These ideas help people describe the very foundation of life.

History shows us that this word has been used for a long time. It first appeared in a text called the Shvetashvatara Upanishad. In that text, it was linked to a possible first cause. There was even an Indian position called Svabhavavada. This view was similar to naturalism and said things are as their nature makes them.

This shows how long people have wondered about the nature of things.

In Buddhism, the meaning of svabhava changes depending on the school. The Mahayana tradition sometimes uses it to mean Buddha-nature. The Mahaparinirvana Sutra says this nature is indestructible. However, the Śrīmālādevī Siṃhanāda Sūtra says this is not a substantial self.

The Vaibhāṣika school believes things have a constant essence that stays the same through time. This is a very detailed way of looking at the world.

Other traditions like Dzogchen have a very different view. Dzogchen thinkers often argue against the idea of svabhava. They use logic to show that things do not have a fixed essence. The Mirror of the Mind of Samantabhadra is one text that discusses this.

This shows that even when people use the same word, they can have very different ideas. It is a topic that keeps many thinkers busy today.
