Bhakti yoga is a spiritual path in Hinduism. It is also called bhakti marga, which means the path of bhakti. This path focuses on loving devotion toward a personal god or goddess. People use this path to reach moksha, which is a form of spiritual liberation. It is one of three classical paths in Hinduism. The other two paths are jnana yoga and karma yoga.

This path works by focusing the mind and senses on the divine. Some thinkers say it is a way to find harmony between the self and the universe. The word bhakti comes from a Sanskrit root meaning to share or to belong to. In this practice, the goal is to join the true self with the Supreme Brahman. People can choose many different gods to focus their love upon. They might choose Krishna, Rama, Shiva, or the goddess Shakti.

Bhakti has very ancient roots in Indian history. It is mentioned in the Shvetashvatara Upanishad. This old text says bhakti means devotion and love for any endeavor. Later, the Bhagavad Gita discussed bhakti yoga in great depth. Around the middle of the first millennium CE, a big bhakti movement began. It started in Tamil Nadu in South India. This movement was led by groups called the Saiva Nayanars and the Vaisnava Alvars.

There are many ways to practice this devotion. One tradition describes nine specific types of service. These include listening to stories and singing praises. People also practice by remembering the divine or worshipping an image. Some followers practice vaidhi bhakti, which follows set rules and traditions. Others practice raganuga bhakti, which is a spontaneous and natural love. Many different groups follow these ways. The Shaiva tradition focuses on Shiva, while Vaishnavism focuses on Vishnu.

Bhakti yoga connects to many parts of life and thought. It is found in major texts like the Bhagavata Purana. This book uses delightful tales to capture the heart and mind. The path is part of several traditions, including Vaishnavism, Shaivism, and Shaktism. These traditions all see their gods as parts of the same reality called Brahman. Whether through song, service, or prayer, the goal is a deep connection. It is a journey of the heart toward divine bliss.
