A bhajan is a special kind of devotional song. These songs focus on religious themes or spiritual ideas. The word comes from the Sanskrit word bhajana. This word means to revere or to show respect. It can also mean to share or to participate.

People use these songs to show their love for a god. Many people sing them together in a group. This group of performers is often called a mandali. Singing together helps people feel a sense of community. It gives them a way to meet and reconnect.

Bhajans do not have one set of strict rules. They are usually lyrical and follow musical patterns called ragas. Musicians often use instruments to keep a steady beat. They might play drums like the tabla or the dholak. Some people use a tambourine for rhythm. Others use small handheld cymbals called kartals.

These songs can be performed in many different places. You might hear them inside a temple or at a home. Some people sing them under a tree in the open air. They are also sung near river banks or at historic sites.

These musical traditions have very old roots. In Hinduism, they connect to the ancient Vedic era. The Samaveda is an old text that was meant to be sung. It acts like a musical score sheet. Ancient scholars like Shilalin and Krishashva were pioneers in singing and dance. They helped connect music with spiritual stories. During the Bhakti movement, between the 6th and 17th centuries, bhajans became very popular. Saints like Kabir, Mirabai, Tulsidas, and Surdas wrote songs in local languages. This helped more people understand and join in the music.

Different religions use these songs in their own ways. In Hinduism, bhajans are very common in the Vaishnav tradition. This tradition focuses on deities like Krishna, Rama, and Vitthal. In Jainism, women often sing songs called stavan. These songs praise Jain religious ideas and philosophy. Buddhism also uses vocal music and chanting in rituals. Some groups, like the Newari Buddhists, have long traditions of singing. Sikhism uses a form of community singing called Shabad Kirtan. In this tradition, professional musicians sing hymns from Sikh scripture.

Bhajans are a way for people to share their faith through art. They can be simple mantras or very complex musical pieces. Some songs are centuries old and passed down through families. Others are newly composed by modern singers.

This music has even traveled to distant lands. In the 19th and 20th centuries, workers took these songs to places like Fiji and South Africa. Today, people all over the world listen to and sing these beautiful songs.
