One popular style is called bhajan. A bhajan is a devotional song that is often very old. These songs use simple words to show love for a god or goddess. Some bhajans list many names for a deity. A special type called sahasranamas can list 1,008 names! People sing these with Bhakti, which means loving devotion. Singing a bhajan is a way to feel closer to one's inner self.

Another style is called kirtan. Kirtan is a communal way of chanting mantras. This means a group of people chants together. It often uses a call-and-response style. One person leads the chant, and then the group responds. People often use instruments and dance during a kirtan. This practice is deeply rooted in the Vedic tradition.

Musicians use many traditional instruments to play this music. They might play the Veena, which is a stringed instrument. They may play the Venu, which is a flute. Some use the Sarangi or the Mridanga. The Tabla is another type of drum used for rhythmic beat patterns called tala. Classical music also uses ragas, which are special melodic forms.

The history of this music goes back to the oldest scriptures. These are called the Vedas. One part of the Vedas, the Samaveda, describes music in great detail. In the Rig Veda, a woman named Gargi was a great Veena player. Her skill was so high that it inspired a famous verse. Some people believe that devoting music to God can lead to Moksha. This is a state of being close to God. Famous music-saints like Sant Tyagaraja have also helped carry this tradition forward.
