Classical music in India has two main branches. The first is Carnatic music from the southern regions. It often focuses on singing and fixed songs. The second is Hindustani music from the north, east, and central areas.

Hindustani music was shaped by ancient Hindu traditions and Persian styles from the Mughals. Both styles use seven main notes called svaras. These are like the Do, Re, Mi notes in Western music. They are also known as Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, and Ni. Musicians use these notes to build beautiful melodies called ragas.

Learning these musical rules takes a lot of skill. Musicians use ragas, which are melodies made from specific rules. They also use tala, which are rhythmic patterns played on percussion instruments.

In Carnatic music, singers add beautiful decorations to their songs. This is called gāyaki, or a singing style. There are about 300 different ragams used in this tradition today. Some notes are steady and do not move, while others can change. This creates a wide range of different sounds and feelings.

History tells us about great masters and important books. In the 13th century, Śārṅgadeva wrote the Sangita-Ratnakara. This is a very important book for both classical traditions.

In the south, Purandara Dasa is known as the father of Carnatic music. Many famous artists have shared their talent through the centuries. Every December, the city of Chennai holds a huge eight-week music season. It is the largest cultural event of its kind in the world.

Indian music is always finding new ways to connect with the world. In the 1960s, jazz musicians like John Coltrane used the sitar in their songs.

Artists sometimes use sounds from Bollywood movies in their tracks. This shows how music can travel across borders and bring different cultures together.
