People have made music for thousands of years. Some ancient cave paintings show people dancing.

Other old art shows people playing drums or harps. Music is a big part of life and faith in India.

There are two main types of classical music. The first is Carnatic music from the South. It often focuses on singing. The second is Hindustani music from the North. This style was shaped by many different cultures over time. Both types use seven main notes. These notes are called svaras. They are like the Do, Re, Mi of Western music.

Music in India is always changing. People mix old sounds with new styles. For example, jazz and rock artists have used Indian instruments like the sitar. Today, you can even hear Indian sounds in hip-hop. From folk songs to pop, music brings people together in many ways.
