arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Filmi is the exciting music made for movies in India. It is a huge part of the music world there. In fact, it makes up 72% of all music sales in India!

This music is loved by many people. It is popular in India, Nepal, and Pakistan. People living far away also listen to it. This includes the Indian diaspora, which are people living outside of India. Some call it "Bombay melody," but many say "Filmi" is a better name. This is because the music belongs to all of India, not just one city.

Making filmi music involves many talented people working together. Music directors, also called composers, write the main tunes.

Lyricists write the words for the songs. In the past, these words used beautiful poetry. Some lyricists wrote in Hindi or Urdu. Others wrote in southern languages like Tamil or Malayalam. Then, playback singers record the songs in a studio. These singers are famous for their amazing voices. During a movie, the actors move their lips to match the recorded song. This is called lip-syncing.

Filmi music has a long and changing history. In the early years, it sounded like Indian classical music. This included styles called Carnatic and Hindustani music. It also used local folk music from different regions.

As time passed, composers began adding Western sounds. They used things like orchestration and new instruments. This change became very common after the middle of the 20th century. Today, filmi soundtracks are very diverse. They often blend many different musical styles into one song.

Many famous names have helped shape this music. In the 1940s, directors like Naushad Ali were very important. During the 1950s and 1960s, composers like Shankar Jaikishan were well known. S. D. Burman was another big name from that time.

Many playback singers became legends too. Names like Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar are very famous. A. R. Rahman is a modern star. He is a very famous composer known all over the world. He has even won two Academy Awards!

His music has reached people in many different countries.

Filmi music connects to many other parts of the world. Sometimes, Western musicians use filmi songs in their own music. For example, the group The Black Eyed Peas used tunes from the 1970s. Other songs from Indian movies appear in American films. Even the band Devo was inspired by a Bollywood song.

People use different ways to see what is popular. Long ago, a radio show called Binaca Geetmala ranked the best songs. Today, people use the internet and CDs to find new music. Filmi music continues to grow and travel across the globe.
