This music is very important to the culture. It has even helped shape the music of nearby lands in West Asia. In the past, it traveled to India through the Mughal Empire. This happened because the empire brought Iranian musicians to its royal courts.

Learning how the music works is like looking at a giant puzzle. Classical music uses special melody types called dastgah. These modes are like a set of rules for how to play.

Folk music is different because it is for everyone to enjoy. People sing folk songs for weddings, harvests, or even to help babies sleep. Some performers are storytellers who recite epic poems. Other musicians are called bakshy, who are wandering singers. They play a stringed instrument called a dotar to tell stories about brave warriors.

Music in this region has a history that goes back thousands of years.

Very old records show music existed in the Elam civilization. Archaeologists found beautiful trumpets made of gold, silver, and copper. These were made by the Oxus civilization between 2200 and 1750 BC. They also found old harps at sites like Kul-e Fara. During the Parthian Empire, musicians called gōsān played for kings and in theaters. They sang about the deeds of gods and great men.

Many famous people helped shape the sounds we hear today.
