People create paintings, pottery, and sculptures from stone or metal. They also make lovely textile arts like woven silk. This art covers a huge area called the Indian subcontinent. This includes countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. It also reaches into Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives.

A strong sense of design is found in all these works. This design shows up in both old and new art.

Many artists use special ways to make their work.

In very old cave paintings, artists used a red wash. They made this color from a powdered mineral called geru. This mineral is a type of iron oxide.

In the Indus Valley, people made small stone seals. These seals were often about one inch square. They had a little bump on the back for a cord. This helped people carry them or wear them as jewelry. Some seals even show people in yoga-like poses.

History shows that Indian art has changed over a long time.

Some art was made in rock-cut prayer halls called chaityas. These were often made of wood, but stone lasted longer. Artists also made beautiful stone gates called toranas. These gates have carvings that tell stories. This long history connects many different cultures together.
