It includes many things like statues of the Buddha and bodhisattvas, who are helpful beings. Artists also make mandalas, which are special patterns, and build grand temple architecture. You might see paintings on walls called frescoes or objects like bells and stupas. This art matters because it helps people connect with the teachings of Buddhism. It turns deep ideas into things people can see, touch, and feel.

In the beginning, artists did not show the Buddha as a person. This is called an aniconic style, where symbols were used instead. For example, they might show his footprints to represent his presence.

Later, artists began to carve his face and body in a style called iconic art. This changed how people practiced their faith through seeing images. In the Gandhara region, statues looked very natural with wavy hair and sandals.

In Mathura, artists used a different Indian style with thin clothes and lotus seats. These different ways of making art helped people imagine the Buddha's peaceful nature.

This art tradition started a long time ago in northern India. It began in places we now call India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. The earliest pieces date back to a few centuries after Siddhartha Gautama lived.

As time passed, the art changed based on where it traveled. It grew alongside Hindu and Jain art in India, with many temples built together. This history shows how different cultures can influence one another through creativity.

Many different groups helped spread these artistic styles across the world. The Kushan Empire helped connect different regions like Gandhara and Mathura.
