This art began in parts of India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Long ago, artists did not make statues of the Buddha. Instead, they used symbols like footprints to represent him.

Later, artists began to carve his face and body. In the Gandhara region, art looked a bit like Greek art. These statues had wavy hair and wore flowing clothes. In Mathura, artists used a different Indian style. They made statues with thin clothes and lotus seats. As Buddhism spread, the art changed too. It moved north through Central Asia to China, Korea, and Japan. It also moved south to places like Sri Lanka and Thailand.
