People often group these arts into large blocks. East Asian art includes works from China, Japan, Korea, and Tibet. Southeast Asian art includes places like Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. South Asian art is mostly Indian art from the Indian subcontinent. Central Asian art covers that middle region. West Asian art includes the ancient Near East, such as Mesopotamian and Persian art.

These different styles often mix and share ideas through history.

In China, art has many different ways of working. Painters use two main styles called Gongbi and Xieyi. Gongbi is a meticulous style with rich colors and fine details. It often shows portraits or stories. Xieyi is a freehand style that is more exaggerated. It focuses on the feelings of the artist, especially in landscapes.

Artists also use calligraphy, which is the art of beautiful writing. They use different scripts like the elegant small seal script. They also use the Kaishu style, which is simple and neat. This style is still used by many people today.

Chinese craftsmen also made amazing objects like jade and porcelain. Jade is a hard stone used for ornaments or tools. In the Shang dynasty, people made circular jade called Bi and square tubes called Cong. People believed jade was immortal and could protect them.

Some people were even buried in jade burial suits. Porcelain is a type of ceramic made from kaolin at high heat. During the Tang dynasty, it was divided into white and celadon types. In the Song dynasty, the city of Jingdezhen became a famous center for blue and white porcelain.

In Tibet, art is often sacred and tied to Buddhism.

One beautiful tradition is the sand mandala, or kilkhor. Artists build colorful patterns using sand. Once the ceremony is finished, they destroy the mandala. This shows that all material things are transitory, or do not last forever.

People also carve holy mantras into rocks to show devotion. They might paint images of compassionate beings like Chenrezig. This deity is often shown with one thousand arms. These images help people during their meditation practices.

Some of the oldest art in Asia comes from very long ago. In Northeast Asia, people lived in difficult climates.

Around 21,000 BCE, the Mal'ta culture created small figures. These are called Venus figurines and are made from mammoth ivory. They often show stylized clothes and faces. These works are part of the Upper Paleolithic period. This was a time when humans were just beginning to make art. Asian art connects the very old past to our modern world.
