Ancient art comes from many advanced cultures that used writing. These groups lived long ago in places like China, India, and Egypt.

In the Arabian Peninsula, people made beautiful art through trade and skill. They carved stylized heads from a white stone called alabaster. Some kingdoms, like the famous Sheba, became very wealthy. They traded special scents called aromatics, such as frankincense and myrrh. This trade connected them to far-off lands like Persia and India. Because they were hard to conquer, these rulers held great power. Their art often used strong, square shapes for the human body.

In ancient Egypt, art was all about creating a sense of order. Artists used clear lines and flat colors to show balance. They used vertical and horizontal lines to keep everything in the right place. They also used size to show who was important in society. A Pharaoh would be drawn much larger than anyone else. Even gods were drawn larger than lesser gods to show their power. Colors had special meanings, too. Blue and green represented the Nile and life. Yellow stood for the sun god, while red showed power.

Ancient Egypt also had amazing ways of making things. As early as 3500 BC, they made a material called faience. This was not made of clay, but of a ceramic made from quartz. It was even better than some pottery made much later in Europe. Most Egyptian art was very religious. It showed gods, goddesses, and the divine Pharaohs. One king named Akhenaton even changed the religion to worship one sun god, Aten. This caused the art to change into a more natural style for a short time. After he died, the artists went back to their old, stylized ways.

Other cultures had very different styles and tools. The Etruscans in Italy were great at making things from terracotta, which is baked clay. They also made famous bronze statues and beautiful jewelry. In Greece, artists were known for their pottery and tall stone buildings. Their sculptures often used a pose called contrapposto to look more real. Greek pottery was often decorated in black and gold. In Mesopotamia, the land between the rivers, people made small cylinder seals. These were tiny tools made of quartz with pictures carved into them. They might show deities or even a winged lion.

Many of these ancient styles helped people share stories. In the Hittite lands, artists used certain images to help people who could not read. They would combine these images to make complex scenes. These scenes often showed gods, rituals, or people hunting animals. The Hittites lived in Anatolia from the nineteenth to the twelfth century BC. Even though many items were moved to museums long ago, we still learn a lot. Ancient art connects us to how people lived and what they believed. It shows the skill and the beauty of the very first great civilizations.
