These musical traditions grew in places like China, Egypt, and Greece. They also grew in India, Persia, Rome, and Mesopotamia. Most ancient music focused on a single melody. This is called monophony. People also used improvisation to change music as they played. Many songs also used text to tell stories. Music helped people express their feelings and connect with others.

In the beginning, people shared music by memory. This is called oral transmission. They did not have ways to write it down. Later, societies began to use writing to save their songs. This helped them keep music the same for a long time. One of the oldest written songs is the Hurrian Hymn No. 6. It dates back to the 14th century BCE. This was a big change for how music worked. It allowed people to study and play old themes again.

People in the Old Kingdom played harps and flutes. They also used pipes that sounded like clarinets. By the Middle Kingdom, they added lutes and percussion. A special rattle called a sistrum was used in religious ceremonies. Scholars try to guess how these sounded today. They look at holes in old flutes to help.

In Mesopotamia, people made amazing string instruments. Archaeologist Leonard Woolley found fragments of lyres in the city of Ur.

These were found in 1929 and date to 2750 BCE. One famous instrument was the bull-headed lyre. Sadly, it was destroyed during the 2003 Iraq War. In India, a book called the Natya Shastra taught about music. It was written between 200 BCE and 200 CE. This book said certain notes could show different emotions. For example, some notes could feel heroic.

Ancient music connects to many things we know today. In Greece, music was part of a school lesson. Most men learned to sing and dance. They even thought the stars made music in the sky. They called this idea musica universalis.
