People have different ideas about what counts as early music. In 1726, the Academy of Ancient Music used a specific definition. They said it was music by people living before 1600. The famous composer Johannes Brahms saw it differently. He thought it included the High Renaissance and Baroque periods. Some scholars even look back to ancient Greece and Rome. These eras happened before 500 AD.

Many talented groups help us hear this music today. In the late 20th century, interest in these eras grew. New groups like the Tallis Scholars were formed. The Early Music Consort is another famous group. You might also hear the Taverner Consort and Players.
