Musical notation is a system of symbols used to represent music visually.

When musicians look at these signs, they are reading music to understand how to perform a piece. These systems show the parts of a song that are most important for a specific musical tradition. Different styles of music use very different methods to share their sounds. For example, classical music often uses sheet music with lines called staves and small noteheads.

In professional country music, players often use the Nashville Number System. People who play string instruments like the guitar might use tablature to show finger moves.

These symbols can be written on many things, such as stone, clay, or paper. Today, many people use computers to print or copy musical scores.

Writing music down has been a part of human history for a very long time.

The earliest forms of notation are found on clay tablets from Nippur in Babylonia. These tablets date back to about 1400 BCE. They contain fragmentary instructions for playing music using a diatonic scale. Another tablet from about 1250 BCE shows a more advanced way to write music. These ancient notes helped people play a lyre, which is a string instrument.

This music was used for both religious ceremonies and important activities in royal courts. Because these old tablets are broken, it is hard for us to know exactly how the music sounded.

In Ancient Greece, people used a different system from the 6th century BCE until about the 4th century CE.

This notation used letter symbols to show the pitch of a song. These letters were placed above the words being sung. They also used simple symbols to show long or short rhythms. A famous example is the Seikilos epitaph, which dates from the 2nd century BCE to the 2nd century CE. Other examples include the Delphic Hymns from the 2nd century BCE. These pieces show how the Greeks used symbols to help them sing and perform.

In the Byzantine Empire, musicians used a special system called Byzantine round notation.

This system used symbols called neumes that look like small brush strokes. These symbols are often called "hooks" in modern Greek. Unlike Western notation, these neumes show the direction of the pitch, such as rising or falling. In the 13th century, a scholar named Safi al-Din al-Urmawi created a system using geometric shapes to show rhythm.

This helped develop musical ideas that were later used in other parts of the world. Many of these traditions are still used in Orthodox Churches today.

Musical notation has changed a lot as technology and instruments have improved.

In medieval Europe, the Christian Church worked to make chants the same in many different places. This helped create the ancestor of the modern Western system of notation. During the Renaissance and Baroque eras, notation continued to grow and change. In the Classical period from 1750 to 1820, notation became more detailed. In the 20th and 21st centuries, some composers even use graphical notation, which uses drawings.

Since the 1980s, musicians have also used computer programs to write their scores. These tools help people all over the world share their music.
