A musical staff is a special tool for writing music. It uses horizontal lines to show different musical pitches.

Most staffs have five lines and spaces between them. Musicians place symbols on these lines to create a song. The vertical position tells you the pitch of a note. The horizontal position shows when the note happens in time.

This system helps people read and play music together.

To use a staff, you must look at the clef. A clef is a symbol at the very beginning. It tells you which note each line represents. For example, the treble clef marks the second line as a G.

You count the lines from the bottom to the top. Notes can sit directly on a line or in a space. If a note is very high or low, you add extra ledger lines. These small lines hold the notes that sit outside the main staff.

Sometimes, musicians need to play many notes at once. A brace is a curly bracket that joins two or more staffs.

This creates what is called a grand staff. A piano player uses a grand staff to read music. The top staff is for the right hand. The bottom staff is for the left hand.

You might also see a bracket used to group instruments. This shows that a whole section, like the violins, plays together.

Writing music has changed a lot over many centuries. Long ago, people used neumes to show the shape of a melody. These did not show exact pitches. They were like memory aids for songs people already knew. Around the year 1000, some manuscripts began using lines for pitch. A man named Guido d'Arezzo helped create the modern staff. He used a four-line staff. By the 13th century, five-line staffs appeared in Italy.

These lines helped musicians play with more precision.

Think of a staff like a math graph for sound. On a graph, you use lines to show numbers. On a staff, you use lines to show pitch. The staff also uses a time signature to help with timing. Bar lines help group the notes into smaller parts called measures. Whether it is for a drum or a piano, the staff makes music clear. It turns sounds into a map that anyone can follow. This allows beautiful music to be shared across the world.
