A musical staff is a set of lines.

Most staffs have five lines. They also have spaces between the lines. We use these lines to show musical notes.

Where a note sits tells us its pitch. High notes are at the top. Low notes are at the bottom. A note can sit on a line or in a space. If a note is too high or low, we add extra lines. These are called ledger lines.

A sign called a clef sits at the start. It tells us which note each line represents. The treble clef marks a G on the second line.

This helps us know the exact pitch.

Sometimes, musicians use more than one staff. A curly line called a brace joins them.

This is used for instruments like the piano. It creates a grand staff. The top part is for the right hand. The bottom part is for the left hand.

Other lines called brackets group many instruments together. This helps an orchestra play as one unit.
