Percussion instruments are tools used to make music by being struck, scraped, or rubbed.

You can use a beater, a stick, or even your own hands to play them. Some people call percussion the "heartbeat" or "backbone" of a musical group. This is because they often provide the rhythm that keeps everyone in time.

While many instruments only play a beat, some can also play melodies or harmonies. In a large orchestra, percussionists might play drums or bells to add special accents.

They play a huge role in almost every style of music you hear today.

There are many different ways that these instruments make their sounds. Scientists often group them into four main categories based on how they work. Idiophones are instruments that vibrate through their entire body, like bells or a xylophone.

Membranophones make sound when you strike a stretched skin or head, such as a snare drum. Chordophones are usually string instruments, but some like the piano are also considered percussion. Finally, aerophones are wind instruments, but some like a siren can be played by percussionists. This shows how diverse the percussion family truly is.

History tells us that percussion instruments might be the oldest musical tools ever made.

The word itself comes from the Latin word "percussio," which means to beat or strike. In the 18th and 19th centuries, orchestral composers used instruments like the triangle very sparingly. However, the use of percussion became much more frequent during the 20th century. Composers began to experiment with many new sounds and ways to play. This changed how people thought about what could be used to make music.

Percussionists use many specific tools and instruments to perform their art. Some instruments have a definite pitch, meaning they play specific musical notes.

Examples of these tuned instruments include the marimba, timpani, and glockenspiel. Other instruments have an indefinite pitch, which means they make a rhythm without a clear note.

You can hear this in the crash of cymbals or the beat of a bass drum. Musicians even use special notation to write this music down on a staff. Some use a standard rhythm clef, while others use a bass clef.

Musicians are incredibly creative and can find music in almost anything.

While most people think of a drum kit, some artists use unconventional objects. A composer might use an anvil, a metal pipe, or even a garbage can. Some even use things like glass bottles, rocks in a bucket, or shopping carts.

In the past, some pieces of music even used real cannons for sound. Whether using a professional drum or a simple bucket, percussion brings life to music.
