These circular instruments can be flat or shaped like a bowl. Most people play them by striking the surface with a mallet. Some gongs make a loud, crashing sound. Others are part of a tuned set that plays bell-like notes.

People use them to bring joy and meaning to music. They can be played all alone or in big groups. This makes them a very special part of many musical traditions.

There are three main ways to shape a gong.

Suspended gongs are flat discs that hang from a cord. Bossed gongs have a raised knob in the center called a boss or nipple. You can also find bowl gongs that rest on soft cushions.

When you hit a flat gong, it vibrates in many ways to create a crash. This type is often called a tam-tam. However, bossed gongs produce a specific, tuned note. Musicians use different mallets to change how the sound feels.

History shows that gongs have been around for a very long time.

The earliest drawings of gongs are on ancient bronze drums from Vietnam. Old Chinese records from the sixth century also mention them. The word "gong" actually comes from the island of Java in Indonesia.

In China, gongs once helped signal workers in the fields. They were also used to clear paths for important officials. Sometimes, the number of hits told people how important a leader was.
