A sonata is a special kind of musical piece. It is usually made for instruments like the piano or the violin.

Most sonatas are divided into three or four parts called movements. These movements help organize the music into different sections. Some movements might be very fast and lively. Other movements might be slow and calm. This structure helps the listener follow the story of the music. A smaller or easier version is sometimes called a sonatina.

There are different ways to play and build a sonata. In the Baroque period, people often played them with a continuo. This is a group of instruments that provides a steady base. Later, most sonatas were played by just one solo instrument. Often, this was a keyboard instrument like a piano. Some sonatas use one instrument alone, while others use a solo instrument with a keyboard for help. There are even sonatas made for different combinations of instruments. The way a sonata is built can change based on the time and place.

Long ago, sonatas were split into two main types. The first type was the sonata da chiesa, which means "church sonata." These were meant to be played in a church. They often had a slow start and a lively finish. The second type was the sonata da camera, or "chamber sonata." These were meant for royal courts. They often used tunes that sounded like dances. A famous composer named Arcangelo Corelli wrote many trio sonatas in 1685. His work helped other great musicians like Bach and Vivaldi.

During the Classical period, the sonata became a very important way to organize large works. Composers like Joseph Haydn began using the name for his piano music in 1771.

A common way to order the movements was to start with an Allegro. This is a fast movement where the musical themes are developed. Next, there was often a slow movement like an Andante or Adagio. Some sonatas also included a dance movement, such as a Minuet. Finally, the piece would end with a fast Finale. This became a standard way to write music.

Ludwig van Beethoven made the sonata even more famous. He wrote 32 piano sonatas that are still very important today.

Many serious musicians believe they must master his works. The sonata idea became so big that it changed how we think about all music. Even a huge symphony can be thought of as a sonata for a whole orchestra. This shows how much the sonata shaped the music we hear in concert halls today.
