Most sonatas have three or four parts. We call these parts movements. Some movements are fast. Others are slow.

Long ago, people made different kinds of sonatas. Some were for churches. We call these sonatas da chiesa. Others were for royal courts. These are called sonata da camera. The court ones often used dance tunes. A man named Corelli wrote many famous ones. His work helped other great makers like Bach and Vivaldi.

Later, the sonata became very important for big works. A famous maker named Haydn used the name for his piano music. Then came Beethoven. He wrote 32 sonatas for the piano. His music is so great that many players must learn it. Today, we still use the sonata to organize music. Even a big symphony can be seen as a sonata for an orchestra.
