Some people call it serious music. Others call it cultivated music. This music often follows many rules. It uses complex ideas and deep structures.

In the West, people often write this music down. They use music notation to save the notes. This is different from folk music. Folk music is often shared by speaking or singing. Art music is often kept in books.

Listening to art music can take work. You must pay close attention to hear it well. Some people say jazz can be art music too. This is true if the music is very hard. Some rock bands also try to make art music. They may mix rock with older styles. This is called progressive rock.

In the past, people split music into two groups. They had serious music and light music. Now, those lines are often blurred. Many artists mix different styles together. They might use sounds from many cultures. This makes the music very rich and deep.
