An étude is a piece of music made for practice.

Each piece helps a player master one specific skill. These pieces are also called studies. In the early 1800s, the piano became very popular. This led to many new études for the piano. Some composers, like Frédéric Chopin, wrote pieces that were very hard.

These were so tough that they were played in big concerts. Some people call these "concert studies."

Many other instruments use études too. Cellists use them to learn new ways to move their hands. Friedrich Dotzauer wrote 113 studies for the cello. Some were for beginners, while others were for experts.

Guitarists and flute players also have special books to help them learn.

In the 1900s, music changed. Some composers made études that were strange and new. John Cage even used star charts to write his music. These pieces can be very difficult to play. Even so, études remain a great way to build skill and pride in music.
