It turns human motion into a special kind of code. People use many tools to do this work. Some use shapes or symbols on a page. Others use numbers or even letters to show steps. This written record is called a dance score.

These scores are very important for many reasons. They help people study how dances were done long ago. They also help dancers perform old dances again. Using notation can even help a creator own their work through a copyright.

There are many different ways to write a dance.

Some systems work for almost any kind of movement. Labanotation is a well-known system for all human motion. Another popular one is called Benesh Movement Notation. However, some systems are made for just one style. For example, Kahnotation was made just for tap dance. There is also Tango Notation for Argentine tango. Even Morris dance and Korean dance have their own special ways to be written.

People have been finding ways to record dance for a long time.

In the 1680s, Pierre Beauchamp made a system for Baroque dance. A man named Raoul Auger Feuillet published it in 1700. This system was used to record dances for many years. Later, in 1892, Vladimir Stepanov made a new method. His work helped save the Sergeyev Collection. This famous collection holds the original designs for many ballets. It includes famous dances like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.

Many smart people have added to these tools over the years.

In 1934, Joseph Schillinger made a system based on how bones rotate. In 1948, Hanya Holm became the first Broadway choreographer to copyright her scores. In 1956, Rudolf and Joan Benesh published their own movement system. This system is still used a lot today to restage dances. In 1958, Eshkol and Wachman shared their own way of writing movement. In 1969, Theodor Vasilescu wrote a system for Romanian folk dances.

Technology has also changed how we write down dance.

In 1970, the Chamo System used pictures for Korean dance. In 1982, Eddie Dombrower created the first computer system. It was called DOM, which stands for Dance on Microprocessor. This system used an Apple II computer to work. It showed a moving figure on a screen to show the dance moves. Today, these tools help keep the art of dance alive for everyone to see.
