Social dance is a way for people to connect and have fun.

People do not dance to put on a show for others. Instead, they dance to socialize or for entertainment. Some dances might even be used for special ceremonies. In many Western cultures, people often dance with a partner. Other places might use circle dances or line dances.

These dances change as the values of society change.

Learning these dances often involves following specific steps. In the 15th century, the basse danse used a series of steps in triple time. This dance was performed by large groups in European courts. Italian courts also used many different rhythms and positions. Dance masters even wrote instruction books to teach these moves. In the 1811 to 1830 Regency Era, the Quadrille was very popular. It used steps like the chassé and the jeté to skim the ground.

History shows how dance has moved from courts to the people. In the late 16th century, courtiers used dance to prove their social skills. They danced styles like the pavane and the Canary dance. Often, peasants from the countryside brought new dances to the royal courts. During the Baroque Era, formal balls showed a person's social status. Couples would stand in lines based on their rank in society. A branle might open a ball with the most important couples first.

New styles often arrive with big changes in music and life. The waltz arrived in Britain near the end of the Napoleonic Wars. It was a partner dance where both people were equals. This was very different from older dances. In the early 20th century, Americans paired the Two-Step with Ragtime music. The One-Step became a huge hit because it was easy. Couples just took one step on every beat of the music.

Many modern dances come from mixing different cultures together. In Cuba, Spanish, Indigenous Taíno, and African traditions all blended. This created many beautiful partnered dances that moved to the United States. In the 1950s, the mambo and cha-cha-chá became huge dance crazes. Later, salsa became a major part of life in many cities. Figures like Johnny Pacheco helped make salsa a mainstream style. Today, salsa congresses are large festivals where people learn many styles.
