These nighttime events use music and dancing for entertainment and celebration. People often use masks to hide who they are. This helps them express their true feelings or opinions without being judged. Sometimes, the ball becomes a fun game. Guests try to guess the identities of the people around them.

Masks come in many different shapes and styles. Some are full-face masks that cover everything. Others are half-face masks or masks on a stick that you hold up.

People might choose a black or white base for their mask. Then, they add beautiful patterns and designs on top. In the past, some guests wore very elaborate costumes. For example, the "Vandyke" style was based on old portraits. These masks allow people to feel free and creative.

These parties have a long and colorful history. In the 15th century, they were part of the Carnival season. They helped celebrate big events like royal marriages.

In the 16th century, these dances became very popular in Italy. Venice became a famous place for these fancy celebrations. Later, they spread across mainland Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. Some events were even held in large public gardens in England.

Many famous masquerades have happened in real life. In 1708, a Swiss count brought the Venetian style to London. He held a ball at the Haymarket Opera House.

In 1951, a huge event was held at the Palazzo Labia in Venice. People called it "the party of the century." Another famous party was the Black and White Ball. This one was held by Truman Capote in 1966 at the Plaza Hotel in New York City.

Today, you can still find the spirit of the masquerade everywhere. In French Guiana, women wear disguises at Touloulous balls. In the United States, people use masks for Mardi Gras in places like New Orleans.

You can even find masks in stores for Halloween. Many stories and games use these ideas too. You might see masks in "The Phantom of the Opera" or in video games like "Assassin's Creed II." They remain a wonderful way to play and celebrate.
