It is a time for people to come together and feel a sense of social unity. Many people use elaborate costumes and masks to change how they look. This allows them to set aside their everyday selves and join the crowd. These festivities often include street parties and shows that feel like a circus.

For many, it is a special time to celebrate before a quiet period called Lent begins.

The way people celebrate depends on their traditions and what they eat.

Because Lent is a time for fasting, Carnival is a time for great indulgence. People enjoy eating many treats like pancakes, donuts, and other sweet desserts. In the past, families used this time to eat up their stores of meat, butter, and milk. This helped prevent food from rotting before the spring harvest arrived. Some people even use this time to think about the sacrifices they will make later. They might choose to give money to the poor instead of buying sweets.

Carnival has many different roots that go back a very long time.

Some believe it comes from ancient Roman festivals like the Saturnalia. Others point to Greek celebrations like the Anthesteria. In the Middle Ages, it became a way for people to feast before the rigors of Lent. There is also a link to old Germanic tribes. They held rituals to drive away the winter spirits and welcome the light of spring. These old ways helped create the festive spirit we see in many places today.

Different parts of the world use different names for these celebrations.

In places with many Catholics, it is often called Carnival. In some areas, people call it Shrovetide or Fastelavn. Slavic nations celebrate a version called Maslenitsa. The word "Carnival" might come from a Latin phrase meaning "remove meat." This refers to the upcoming fast. In some parts of Europe, the season officially starts on November 11th. This date is linked to harvest celebrations or the feast of St. Martin.

Today, you can see how these old traditions connect to modern life.

Large parades still feature decorated floats that move through the streets. These floats might have been inspired by ancient wooden boats used in processions. Whether it is a small local party or a huge event like the Rio Carnival, the goal is the same. It is a time to celebrate community and the changing of the seasons. People all over the world find joy in these shared moments of wonder.
