Lent is a solemn religious season for many Christians.

It serves as a time to prepare for the celebration of Easter. The season lasts for a total of 40 days. This number comes from stories in the Bible. Many different groups observe Lent. These include Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, and Orthodox traditions. Some groups, like Baptists or Methodists, may observe it too. However, not every church follows this tradition.

People use Lent to grow closer to God in specific ways. There are three main pillars of this season. These are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Almsgiving means giving to people in need. Fasting is when people eat less food or skip certain meals. Some people choose to give up luxuries like treats. This is often called a Lenten sacrifice.

Others might use spiritual disciplines. This could include reading a daily devotional or praying with a calendar.

Lent is based on important stories from the Bible. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke tell of Jesus in the desert. He spent 40 days fasting and praying there. During this time, he also faced temptation by Satan. Other biblical figures also fasted for 40 days. Moses went into the mountains to pray and fast. The prophet Elijah also spent 40 days and nights without food. These fasts helped prepare them for their important work.

The history of Lent involves many different traditions. Before the 6th century, some used a practice called the Black Fast. This meant eating only one vegetarian meal after the sun went down. The Coptic Orthodox Church still follows this kind of fasting today. The season's name comes from an Old English word. It likely meant the spring season. This is because the days begin to get longer. In many languages, the name refers to the 40 days. For example, some call it the "great fast."

Different churches follow different schedules for the season. In Western churches, Lent starts on Ash Wednesday.

It ends near the end of Holy Week. Some end on Maundy Thursday, while others end on Holy Saturday. In Eastern Christianity, the season is called Great Lent. It starts on Clean Monday and lasts 40 days without a break. The final week is known as Holy Week. It begins with Palm Sunday and ends with the joy of Easter.
