It marks the very first day of Lent. Lent is a season that lasts for seven weeks before Easter arrives. During this time, many people focus on prayer and giving to others. This day follows Shrove Tuesday. It serves as a serious start to a long period of reflection.

On this day, many people attend special church services to receive ashes.

A leader often marks a cross on a person's forehead using these ashes. In some places, the ashes are sprinkled over the top of the head instead. These ashes are made by burning palm leaves from the previous year's Palm Sunday. While doing this, a leader might say, "Repent, and believe in the Gospel." They might also say, "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." This practice is a sign of repentance that goes back to biblical times.

Many different types of churches observe Ash Wednesday.

This includes Catholic, Lutheran, Moravian, and Anglican denominations. Some people in the Baptist, Methodist, and Nazarene traditions also observe it. The United Protestant tradition, like the Church of North India, honors this day too. Some Reformed churches did not observe it in the past. However, many Reformed churches have started observing it since the mid-twentieth century. Even the Metropolitan Community Churches observe this holy day.

Fasting is another very important part of the day.

Fasting means eating less food or skipping certain meals. Many Christians also practice abstinence, which means they do not eat meat. For example, Roman Catholics follow rules about meat and fasting. In India and Pakistan, some Christians fast until the sun goes down. In India, the day is called Vrat Vibhuti. This name means "the sacred ash of the Holy Fast."

Ash Wednesday helps people prepare for the arrival of Easter. It always falls 46 days before Easter Sunday. The length of Lent is 40 days, but Sundays are not counted. This makes the whole season 46 days long in total. Many people also make a "Lenten sacrifice" starting on this day. This is a special thing they choose not to do until Easter. They might give up a certain food or habit. This helps them stay focused on their faith during the season.
