It serves as the official commencement of Lent. Lent is a liturgical season consisting of forty days of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. This period occurs in the weeks leading up to Easter. The day follows Shrove Tuesday. It acts as a solemn transition into a season of spiritual reflection.

The central mechanism of the day involves the imposition of ashes. This is a ritual where ashes are placed on the heads of worshippers. These ashes are created by burning palm leaves from the previous year's Palm Sunday celebrations. During the service, a religious leader typically uses the ashes to mark a sign of the cross. This sign is placed on the forehead or the top of the head. This gesture signifies that the person is a follower of Jesus. The words spoken during this ritual are often "Repent, and believe in the Gospel." Another traditional phrase is "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." This second phrase is based on the biblical account of Adam and Eve.

Different Christian traditions observe the day in various ways. Many Latin Church Catholics, Lutherans, Anglicans, and Moravians observe Ash Wednesday. The United Protestant tradition, including the Church of North India and the United Church of Canada, also honors the day. Some members of the Baptist, Methodist, and Nazarene traditions participate in these observances. Even the Metropolitan Community Churches observe Ash Wednesday. However, some groups have different approaches. The Eastern Orthodox Church does not generally observe Ash Wednesday. Instead, they begin Great Lent on Clean Monday. Historically, many Reformed churches did not observe Ash Wednesday or Lent due to the regulative principle of worship. Since the mid-twentieth century, many Reformed groups like the Presbyterian Church (USA) have begun to observe it.

Fasting and abstinence are primary components of the Lenten discipline. Fasting involves eating less food or skipping certain meals. Abstinence refers to refraining from eating specific foods, such as meat.

For Roman Catholics, canon law 1252 dictates that abstinence from meat begins at age 14. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, healthy Catholics between ages 18 and 59 may eat one full meal and two smaller meals. These combined meals must not equal the size of a full meal. Some practitioners choose more intense forms, such as a bread and water fast. In India and Pakistan, some Christians fast until sunset on Ash Wednesday. In India, the day is known as Vrat Vibhuti, meaning "the sacred ash of the Holy Fast."

Lent is mathematically tied to the date of Easter. Ash Wednesday always occurs 46 days before Easter Sunday. While Lent is described as a forty-day fast, Sundays are not included in the count. This calculation results in a total season length of 46 days. The date of Easter itself is determined by the first full moon occurring on or after the March equinox. The equinox is a fixed point on March 21. Because Easter moves each year, the date of Ash Wednesday changes as well. This ensures the season always leads directly into the Eastertide celebrations.

Many people use Ash Wednesday to begin a Lenten sacrifice. A sacrifice is a specific habit or item a person chooses to give up until Easter.

Examples might include giving up alcohol or certain foods. People often pray for the strength to maintain these sacrifices throughout the entire season. In some communities, Christians break their Ash Wednesday fast together. They might hold a communal Lenten supper in a church parish hall. This allows the community to support one another in their spiritual goals.

Ash Wednesday connects to broader themes of mortality and repentance. The ritual use of ashes serves as a physical reminder of human fragility. The phrase regarding dust and returning to dust connects the practice to the book of Genesis. This links the current season of Lent to the very beginning of the biblical story. By participating in these rituals, followers engage with centuries of tradition. They connect their personal discipline to the wider history of the Christian faith. The day serves as a bridge between the celebrations of the past and the hope of the coming Easter.
