Lent is a solemn religious observance within the Christian liturgical year.

It serves as a dedicated period of preparation for the celebration of Easter. The season is characterized by themes of repentance, self-denial, and spiritual discipline. Many different Christian traditions observe Lent, including Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, and Orthodox churches. Some Anabaptist, Baptist, and Methodist groups also participate, though not all of them do. The core purpose is to prepare the believer for the Resurrection of Jesus. This is achieved through three main pillars: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

The practice of Lent involves several specific spiritual mechanisms. Many Christians commit to a Lenten sacrifice by giving up certain luxuries. This imitation of Christ's sacrifice helps believers focus on their faith. Some engage in mortifying the flesh or practicing simple living. Others adopt spiritual disciplines, such as reading a daily devotional. A common devotion in Roman Catholic, Lutheran, and Anglican traditions is the Stations of the Cross. This practice occurs especially on Fridays to remember the Via Dolorosa. Some also participate in Passion Plays, which are often interdenominational productions.

The duration of Lent is always 40 days. This specific number is deeply significant in Christian theology. It echoes the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert. According to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, Jesus endured temptation by Satan during this time. The number 40 also relates to other biblical figures. Moses fasted for 40 days and nights in the mountains. The prophet Elijah also underwent a 40-day fast before reaching Horeb. These historical fasts served to prepare these figures for their divine work.

Different denominations follow distinct schedules and rules for the season.

In Western Christian traditions, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. This period lasts approximately six weeks. Depending on local custom, it may end on the evening of Maundy Thursday. It can also conclude at sundown on Holy Saturday during the Easter Vigil. In Eastern Christianity, the season is called Great Lent. It is observed continuously for 40 days without interruption. This tradition begins on Clean Monday and ends on Lazarus Saturday.

The history of Lenten fasting shows how practices have evolved over centuries. Before the 6th century, many observed the Black Fast. This practice required fasting from all food and liquids. Participants were only allowed one vegetarian meal after sunset. The Coptic Orthodox Church continues this form of fasting today. In the 4th century, Athanasius of Alexandria described the Lenten fast as a global observance. Saint Augustine of Hippo noted that fasting became a requirement during this season. Some scholars believe the 40-day period was clarified at the Council of Nicea in 325. Other theories suggest it may have roots in Egyptian Christian traditions.

The name "Lent" has interesting linguistic origins. The English word is a shortened form of the Old English word *lencten. This term meant "spring season" and referred to the lengthening of days. In many other languages, the name describes the activity of fasting itself. For example, Czech and German call it a "fasting period." Arabic, Polish, and Russian refer to it as "The Great Fast." In India, the term *Charam Chalisa* means "climax forty." In Malta, the term *Randan* is used, which is distinctive from other Arabic dialects.

Lent is closely connected to the broader liturgical calendar and the cycle of the Christian year. The final week of the season is known as Holy Week. This week begins with Palm Sunday and leads to the commemoration of Jesus' crucifixion on Good Friday. In some denominations, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday form the Easter Triduum. The season concludes with the joyful celebration of Easter. This event marks the start of the Easter season and recalls the Resurrection. Through these rituals, the season connects historical biblical narratives to the lived experience of modern believers.
