Palm Sunday is a Christian moveable feast held on the Sunday before Easter.

It commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. This event is recorded in each of the four canonical Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The name of the feast comes from the palm branches waved by crowds to honor Christ. This day marks the beginning of Holy Week. In Western Christianity, it starts the final week of the solemn season of Lent. In Eastern Christianity, Holy Week begins after the conclusion of Great Lent.

The biblical accounts describe a specific sequence of events. According to the Gospels, Jesus rode a donkey into the city.

The Gospel of Matthew notes this fulfilled a prophecy from Zechariah 9:9. This prophecy describes a king coming righteous and riding on a donkey's colt. As he entered, the people laid down their cloaks and branches in his path. They also sang parts of Psalm 118:25–26 to bless him. The Gospel of John provides a specific timeline, dating the event to six days before the Passover. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus weeps over the city as he approaches.

Scholars and believers find deep symbolism in these actions. The choice of a donkey may represent peace. While a king on a horse might signal war, a king on a donkey symbolizes a leader of peace. The palm branch itself carries historical weight. In Greco-Roman culture, the palm was a symbol of triumph and victory. It was often linked to the goddess Nike or Victoria. In ancient Egypt, palm branches were used in funeral processions to represent eternal life. In Christian tradition, the "martyr's palm" became a symbol of spiritual victory over death.

Different Christian traditions have unique ways of observing the feast. In many mainstream denominations, clergy bless and distribute palm branches to the congregation.

Because palms are not available in all climates, people use native branches. Common substitutes include box, olive, willow, and yew. In the Catholic, Lutheran, and Anglican traditions, the feast often coincides with Passion Sunday. In these churches, vestments are often deep scarlet red. This color symbolizes the redemptive sacrifice Christ entered Jerusalem to fulfill. In India, the sanctuary may be strewn with marigolds during the service.

Eastern Christianity maintains distinct liturgical customs. The Eastern Orthodox Church considers this one of the Twelve Great Feasts. They often commemorate the event on Lazarus Saturday, following the Gospel text. In these traditions, church hangings and vestments often change to a festive green. In Russia, historical "donkey walk" processions were once common in cities like Moscow.

In these processions, a leader representing Christ rode a horse draped in white cloth. The Tsar would lead the procession on foot. These customs changed over time, and the practice in Moscow ended in the 1720s under Peter I.

Many people use the blessed palms in their daily lives. Some weave the branches into small crosses.

Others hang them in their homes alongside Christian art or keep them in their Bibles. In Western Christianity, there is a ritual cycle for these branches. Churches may collect old palms in a basket during Carnival or Shrovetide. On Shrove Tuesday, these palms are ritually burned to create ashes. These ashes are then used on Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent. This creates a direct link between the celebration and the season of reflection.

Palm Sunday connects to various historical and religious themes. It links biblical prophecy to historical events in Jerusalem. It also connects ancient Greco-Roman symbols of victory to Christian theology. The feast serves as a bridge between the celebration of Christ's entry and the solemnity of his passion. By using local plants like pussy willow in Nordic countries, the tradition adapts to different environments. This shows how a single historical event continues to be interpreted through many different cultural lenses.
