Palm Sunday is a special Christian feast held on the Sunday before Easter.

It marks the very first day of Holy Week. For Western Christians, it begins the end of the solemn season of Lent. In Eastern Christianity, it starts after the conclusion of Great Lent. This day commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.

The name comes from the palm branches people waved to greet him.

According to the four canonical Gospels, Jesus rode a donkey into the city.

The Gospels describe how the crowd showed him great honor. Some people laid their cloaks on the ground. Others scattered small branches or palm fronds in his path. They even sang parts of Psalm 118 to welcome him. This act of laying down garments was a way to honor someone worthy. In the Gospel of John, the text specifically mentions palm fronds.

Many people look for deeper meaning in these stories. Riding a donkey may have been a symbol of peace. In some traditions, a king riding a horse meant he was going to war. A king riding a donkey showed he arrived as a leader of peace. The palm branch itself has a long history of meaning. In ancient Greco-Roman culture, it was a symbol of victory. In ancient Egypt, it represented eternal life.

Different traditions celebrate this day in unique ways. In many churches, clergy bless and distribute palm branches to the people.

If palms are hard to find, people use native trees like willow, olive, or box. In some places, like India, the sanctuary is covered in marigolds.

In Russia, history tells of "donkey walk" processions in cities like Moscow. In those walks, a leader representing Christ rode a horse draped in white cloth. The Tsar would then lead the procession on foot.

People often keep their blessed branches as a special reminder. They might hang them in their homes or keep them in a Bible. Some people weave the branches into small crosses. In Western traditions, these palms are sometimes collected and burned. They are burned on Shrove Tuesday to make ashes. These ashes are then used on Ash Wednesday to start the next Lent. This connects the celebration of the entry to the start of a new season of reflection.
