It is usually celebrated on May 1 in the Northern Hemisphere. This date falls halfway between the spring equinox and the midsummer solstice. Many people celebrate by "bringing in the May." This means gathering green branches and bright wildflowers. They use these to make wreaths or decorate their buildings.

Some people also hold special celebrations on May Eve, the night before.

There are many ways to celebrate this season. One popular tradition is dancing around a maypole. People also crown a May Queen to lead parades.

In some parts of Germany, people wrap a Maibaum, or maypole, in colorful streamers. In Ireland, the festival is called Bealtaine. People there might make a May Bush using a branch decorated with ribbons and shells.

In the Rhineland, a person might secretly deliver a maypole to a girl's house. This tree is often covered in streamers to show affection.

This festival has very old roots. The earliest celebrations might come from the Roman festival called Floralia. This was a festival for Flora, the goddess of flowers. It took place from April 27 to May 3. During Floralia, people watched plays and released animals like hares and goats.

Another ancient event was the Maiouma. This was a month-long festival held in the month of May. Emperor Commodus even set aside money for its many lights and torches.

Different cultures have unique customs for May Day. In the Middle Ages, people in northern Europe lit bonfires on May Eve. In Germanic countries, this is known as Walpurgis Night. In Scotland, the festival was once linked to Beltane.

In Sweden, people used to hold mock battles between Summer and Winter. One group wore furs to represent Winter, while the other wore leaves for Summer. In Tyrol, people once used incense and loud noises to drive away evil. They would run around villages to "smoke out" any lurking witches.

May Day connects many different traditions together. For Roman Catholics, May is a time for devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. They often use flowers to create a "May crowning" for her.

May 1 is also the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. Pope Pius XII chose this date in 1955 for this feast. This was done to provide a different meaning from International Workers' Day. Today, some people even rebuild old pagan festivals to celebrate the season.
