In the United States, the modern holiday began because of a woman named Anna Jarvis. She wanted to create a way to honor her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis. Ann was a peace activist who helped wounded soldiers during the American Civil War.

Anna held the first Mother's Day service in 1908 at a church in West Virginia. She believed a mother is the person who has done the most for you. To honor them, she suggested writing handwritten letters instead of buying expensive gifts. She wanted the day to be about true feelings rather than making money.

History shows that people have celebrated mothers for thousands of years. Long ago, the Greeks had a cult to a goddess named Cybele. The Romans had a festival called Hilaria to honor the mother deity Rhea.

In the United Kingdom, people celebrate Mothering Sunday. This is a Christian tradition where people visit the church where they were baptized. Constance Adelaide Smith helped make this celebration popular in the English-speaking world. She linked it to many things, including Mother Nature and the Virgin Mary. These old traditions show how much people have always valued motherhood.

Different countries use different dates and reasons for their celebrations. In Bolivia, Mother's Day is on May 27 to remember women who fought in a battle.

This made Mother's Day a national holiday on the second Sunday in May.
