A mother is a female parent of a child. This role can happen in many different ways. A biological mother is the person who provides the genetic material for a baby.

Some women become mothers by raising a child through adoption. An adoptive mother becomes a parent through a legal process. There are also stepmothers who join a family by marrying a child's parent.

Even a surrogate mother is a type of mother. She carries a baby for another person using reproductive technology.

Biological motherhood follows a specific natural path. It often begins when a woman becomes pregnant. This process usually lasts for about nine months. During this time, a fetus grows inside the woman's uterus.

After the baby is born, the mother may produce milk. This milk provides important nutrients and antibodies for the newborn. Many babies rely on this milk as their only food for the first six months. As infants get older, they start to eat other foods alongside milk.

History shows that motherhood has many different forms. People have used adoption for a very long time. This practice existed even before human civilization began. In the 20th century, modern systems of adoption were created. These systems use specific laws and rules to protect children.

The United States is a place where adoption is common. In 2001, the US had over 127,000 adoptions. This was nearly half of all adoptions in the whole world.

Social roles for mothers change depending on where people live. In the past, many women stayed home to care for families. In the late 20th century, more women started working paid jobs.

Today, some mothers work in offices while others stay at home. In some European countries, there is a tradition of mothers being homemakers. The role of fathers has also become more important in many Western countries. Different cultures also have different views on marriage and motherhood. In 2013, the number of children born per woman varied greatly. Niger had a high rate of 7.03 children per woman. Singapore had a much lower rate of 0.79.

Health is a very important part of motherhood. For some women, giving birth can be a dangerous time. This is called maternal mortality when a woman dies during or after pregnancy.

In 2006, a study found that Scandinavian countries are very safe for birth. However, some areas in sub-Saharan Africa are less safe. A mother in a low-ranked country faces much higher risks. Doctors and health workers work to make childbirth safer for everyone. Improving basic healthcare helps reduce these risks globally.
