Mother's Day is a global celebration that honors mothers and the maternal bond.

It recognizes the influence of mothers within their families and throughout society. While many countries celebrate on different days, most observations occur in March or May. This holiday complements other family celebrations, such as Father's Day or Grandparents' Day. The concept of honoring motherhood is not new to human history.

Many cultures have held traditions for thousands of years to respect maternal figures.

Ancient civilizations established various ways to honor mother figures. The Greeks practiced a cult to the goddess Cybele. The Romans celebrated a festival called Hilaria to honor the deity Rhea. In the Christian tradition, Mothering Sunday is a long-standing ecclesiastical celebration. This custom is often associated with the image of the Mother Church.

Some modern celebrations remain closely linked to these ancient religious roots. In Greece, people observe both secular and religious celebrations of motherhood.

The modern American version of Mother's Day began in the early 20th century. Anna Jarvis was the primary organizer of this movement. She initiated the first Mother's Day service of worship in 1908. This event took place at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia.

Today, this location is known as the International Mother's Day Shrine. Jarvis wanted to honor her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis. Ann was a peace activist who cared for soldiers during the American Civil War. She also led Mother's Day Work Clubs to improve public health.

Anna Jarvis campaigned heavily to make the day an official holiday. Her efforts led to significant political changes in the United States. In 1910, West Virginia became the first state to recognize it locally. By 1911, every state in the U.S. observed the holiday. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation for the holiday.

He designated the second Sunday in May as the national day. Jarvis even trademarked the specific phrase "Second Sunday in May, Mother's Day, Anna Jarvis, Founder" in 1912. She insisted on using the singular possessive "Mother's" to focus on individual family bonds.

As the holiday grew, it faced challenges regarding its purpose and meaning. By the early 1920s, companies like Hallmark Cards began selling Mother's Day cards.

Jarvis felt this commercialization exploited the spirit of the day. She believed the holiday should focus on sentiment rather than profit. She organized boycotts and even protested at a candy makers' convention in 1923. Jarvis preferred that people write handwritten letters of gratitude. She also argued against the commercial sale of carnations. This tension even led to her arrest for disturbing the peace in 1925.

Different nations have developed unique ways to observe this day. In Bolivia, Mother's Day is held on May 27. This date commemorates a battle where women defended their children.

In the United Kingdom, Constance Adelaide Smith advocated for Mothering Sunday. She linked the tradition to Mother Nature and the Virgin Mary. In Nepal, the Hindu tradition celebrates Mata Tirtha Aunsi. This is known as the "Mother Pilgrimage fortnight."

In some Islamic traditions, great respect is given to mothers. The Quran contains verses that teach children to prioritize loving their mothers.

Today, the ways people celebrate vary by culture and religion. Some families might bake a special cake or give handmade gifts.
