Father's Day is a global observance dedicated to honoring fathers and the concept of fatherhood. It celebrates the paternal bonds between parents and children. The day also recognizes the influence fathers have within society. Many celebrations are designed to complement other family holidays. These include Mother's Day and Grandparents' Day.

Different cultures use various methods to express this appreciation. Some traditions involve religious services, while others focus on gifts or meals.

Religious traditions have provided the foundation for many fatherhood celebrations. In Catholic Europe, the feast of Saint Joseph has been observed since the Middle Ages. Saint Joseph is called the "Nourisher of the Lord" in Catholicism. He is also known as the putative father of Jesus in southern European traditions. This custom was brought to the Americas by Spanish and Portuguese people. The Coptic Orthodox Church also observes Saint Joseph's Day on July 20. This specific Coptic celebration may date back as far as the fifth century.

Another religious tradition exists within the Eastern Orthodox Church. This church appoints the second Sunday before Nativity as the Sunday of the Forefathers. This feast falls between December 11 and December 17. It commemorates the ancestors of Christ, starting with Adam. The celebration emphasizes the patriarch Abraham. It also includes the ancestors of Mary and various prophets. This practice connects the concept of fatherhood to ancient lineage and spiritual history.

Modern versions of Father's Day have distinct historical origins. In 1908, Grace Golden Clayton proposed a day to honor men killed in mining accidents. This proposal was not accepted at that time. In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd sought to establish a nationwide celebration in the United States. Dodd was raised by her father alone along with her five brothers. She convinced the Spokane Ministerial Association to support her idea. This led to the founding of Father's Day in Washington in 1910. The spelling follows the singular possessive precedent set by Mother's Day.

Celebrations vary significantly in their official status and timing. Samoa and South Korea recognize the day as a national holiday. In South Korea, it is called Parents' Day. Lithuania recognizes it as a public holiday. In Italy, it was considered a public holiday until 1977. Many countries, such as India and Japan, celebrate on the third Sunday in June. However, these are often not official public holidays.

In Mongolia, the Men's Association began a celebration on August 8 in 2005.

Specific customs provide a window into how different cultures honor men. In Nepal, Hindus and Newars celebrate Kushe Aunsi. This occurs in late August or early September based on the lunar calendar. Children put a tika on their father's forehead and give him sweets. In return, the father provides blessings of good fortune. In Japan, common presents include sake, sports equipment, or gourmet food. In India, children may give electronic gadgets, books, or gold necklaces.

Father's Day also connects to broader social and cultural themes. It exists alongside International Men's Day, which is celebrated on November 19. This day honors both men and boys. In some regions, celebrations are tied to military service. For example, Mongolia celebrates Soldier's Day on March 18. This officially honors those in the Mongolian Armed Forces but includes all adult men. These various observances show how the idea of fatherhood intersects with religion, history, and national identity.
