A festival is a communal event centered on specific aspects of a community's culture or religion.

These gatherings often function as local or national holidays, such as a mela or Eid. Festivals act as a bridge between different social layers, often demonstrating glocalization, which is the blending of local and global influences. They also represent the interrelationship between high culture and low culture. By breaking daily routines, festivals allow people to experience escapism, socialization, and camaraderie. This practice helps individuals create a sense of geographical connection, belonging, and adaptability within their society.

Many festivals follow a specific mechanism to fulfill communal purposes. Some are known as patronal festivals because they exist to honor specific gods, goddesses, or saints. These events often involve religious commemoration or acts of thanksgiving. Beyond spirituality, festivals provide essential entertainment for local communities. This was especially vital before the era of mass-produced entertainment. Cultural or ethnic festivals also serve an educational role. Elders participate by sharing stories and experiences, which provides a means for unity among families. Through these shared rituals, communities reinforce their traditions and social bonds.

Festivals can be categorized into several distinct types based on their focus. Religious festivals are among the most significant and often mark the passage of the year. Examples include Christmas, Rosh Hashanah, Diwali, Holi, and Eid-al-Fitr. Some of these are considered moveable feasts, meaning their dates change based on lunar or agricultural cycles.

Arts festivals showcase creative achievements in fields like music, film, or literature. Sub-categories include jazz festivals, poetry festivals, and even re-enactment festivals like Renaissance fairs. Food festivals celebrate specific regional products or single items, such as the National Peanut Festival in the United States.

Finally, seasonal and harvest festivals respond to the cycles of nature and the solar or lunar calendars.

History shows that festivals have been a constant in human culture for millennia. Ancient Greek and Roman societies utilized festivals for both communal and administrative purposes. The Roman festival of Saturnalia is believed to have influenced later traditions like Christmas and Carnival. Some traditions are incredibly old; for instance, certain festivals in Ghana predate European colonization in the 15th century.

In the modern era, festivals saw a significant rise in prosperity following the Second World War. The establishment of the Avignon Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1947 helped shape the modern festival model. By the turn of the 21st century, art festivals became even more prominent on the world stage.

Regarding scale, festivals vary greatly in size and attendance. While many large-scale music festivals bring together disparate global groups, the vast majority of festivals are local, modest, and populist. The sheer abundance of these events makes it difficult for researchers to quantify exactly how many exist globally. Some festivals carry immense religious weight, such as the Hindu festival Ganesh Chaturthi. In Maharashtra, this festival involves worshipping clay idols of the god Ganesha. These idols are often immersed in water after one, three, five, seven, ten, or eleven days.

This specific practice was once promoted by Bal Gangadhar Tilak to build Hindu solidarity during the British Raj.

Specific examples highlight how festivals interact with the environment and politics. Among the Ashanti people, traditional festivals are linked to sacred sites with rich biological resources. Annual commemorations help maintain the buoyancy of these sites, which assists in biodiversity conservation. In the Philippines, the sheer variety of celebrations is immense, with at least one festival occurring every single day. These can be dedicated to harvesting crops, fish, milk, or other local goods.

Politically, festivals can be used to disseminate values or reinforce a sense of ownership over a place. They can even be used to rehabilitate or elevate the public image of a city.

Scholars study these events through specialized lenses. Heortology is the formal study of religious festivals. Another field, festive ecology, explores the relationship between the symbolism of a festival and the ecology of the plants, fungi, or animals associated with it. This includes how seasonal changes, like the inundation of the Nile in ancient Egypt, dictate the timing of celebrations. Whether they are celebrating the arrival of Beaujolais nouveau wine or the new year with the Sikh Vaisakhi festival, these events remain vital to human identity.

They connect the history of a people to their current social and natural environments.
