While often called ethnic or traditional, not all ethnic dances are folk dances. For example, ritual dances are usually classified as religious dances because of their specific purpose. Folk dance is distinct because it is primarily a participatory social activity. It is not originally created as a staged performance for an audience. Instead, these dances serve as a way for communities to connect through movement and shared heritage.

The process of performing and learning folk dance relies on community interaction. Most participants have little to no professional training. They do not attend formal dance schools to master these movements. Instead, dancers learn through informal means such as observation and imitation. They receive direct assistance from more experienced members of the community. This method of transmission ensures that traditions are passed down through many generations. Over time, these inherited traditions guide the form and execution of the dance.

Folk dances can be categorized by their origins and how they are performed. Some dances are strictly social and meant for community gatherings. Others have been adapted or stylized for theatrical presentation on a stage. There is also a distinction between folk dance and street dance. Modern styles like hip hop are often called vernacular or street dances. They evolve spontaneously within communities rather than through long-held traditions. Furthermore, some choreographed dances like square dance are often called folk dances, even if they do not fit the strict ethnological definition.

History shows that many folk dances originated during periods of social division. There was once a clear distinction between the dances of the common folk and the social elite. Many modern ballroom and theatrical dances actually evolved from these earlier folk traditions. Because folk dances often developed before modern national borders were established, they frequently cross political lines. For instance, several dances in Serbia, Bulgaria, and Croatia share similar steps and musical structures. They may even share the same names and melodies.

The diversity of folk dance is immense across different global regions. In the Middle East and South Asia, dances reflect centuries of cultural exchange along trade routes like the Silk Road. The Dabke is a well-known circle and line dance performed in Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, and Jordan. In India, the Bhangra dance from Punjab celebrates the harvest. In the Philippines, the Tinikling is a notable traditional dance.

In Europe, a modern movement known as Balfolk has gained popularity. This movement began during the folk revival of the 1970s and grew significantly around the year 2000. Balfolk events feature live folk-inspired music and partner dances. These include the polka, waltz, mazurka, and schottische. These dances were fashionable across Europe during the late 19th century.

Today, international folk dance groups exist in many cities and on college campuses to promote social connection.

Folk dance serves as a vital link to cultural identity and communal harmony. In East Asia, dances like the Lion dance in China use symbolism and costume to celebrate festivals. In Southeast Asia, the Apsara dance of Cambodia expresses local legends. Even in Sri Lanka, dances like the Kalagedi or Pot Dance are tied to specific folk activities. By participating in these traditions, people maintain a living connection to their history. Whether through a sword dance or a circle dance, the practice keeps a culture's spirit active in the modern world.
