Oral tradition, also known as oral lore, is a vital form of human communication. It is the process where knowledge, art, beliefs, and culture are received and preserved through speech or song. Instead of using written texts, people transmit information from one generation to another using their voices. This method includes many forms, such as folktales, ballads, chants, prose, and poetry. It serves as a way for societies to pass down oral history, law, and literature. This is especially important for groups that do not use a writing system, or those who use speech alongside writing.

The mechanism of oral tradition relies on human memory and performance. Information is mentally recorded by specific individuals known as oral repositories. These people are sometimes called "walking libraries" because they hold vast amounts of data in their minds. They are often skilled performers who use gestures and social conventions to bring stories to life. The frequency of telling these traditions is crucial for their preservation. Because oral traditions only exist when they are being told, regular performance helps keep the knowledge from fading. In some cultures, the performance is even checked by other specialists to ensure no errors are made.

Oral traditions vary greatly depending on the social setting and the performer. In Burundi, traditions are often short because they are shared at informal gatherings where everyone takes a turn. In contrast, Rwandan traditions can be much longer. In Rwanda, professional performers may entertain a patron for an entire evening. These professionals must be extremely precise, as mistakes in their performance can lead to punishment. Some traditions also include glosses, which are commentaries provided alongside the main story. These commentaries help the audience understand the deeper meaning of the narrative.

History shows that oral tradition is an ancient and global phenomenon. It is not merely a primitive stage of communication, but a dominant technology used throughout human history. For example, the Judeo-Christian Bible has deep roots in oral traditions. In ancient Greece, the epic poetry of Homer was likely composed and performed orally. Even in ancient Rome, storytelling was a vital medium for transmitting history. Scholars believe that many Roman historical narratives were passed down through celebratory performances for centuries before they were ever written down.

In Africa, oral tradition is a central part of social and spiritual life. Many societies are described as oral civilizations because they place great reverence on the spoken word. In these cultures, oral tradition is used to teach lessons about life, social systems, and religion. It also covers practical knowledge like traditional medicine, crafts, and skills. In some African courts, archivists memorized royal genealogies to serve as an unwritten constitution. In West Africa, the griot is a famous hereditary role. Griots serve as historians, musicians, poets, and mediators. They often use instruments like the balafon or the kora to accompany their stories.

Specific roles and specialized knowledge exist in many different cultures. In Ireland, a storyteller known as a seanchaí served to pass down folklore and history to the head of a lineage. In Albania, traditional epic poetry has been preserved through memory systems that survived even as political structures changed. This tradition is so significant that scholars study Albanian verse to understand how ancient Greek epics might have functioned. In Asia, ancient Indian religions used elaborate mnemonic techniques to preserve sacred texts with incredible precision. In Hinduism, scholars called Trivedis memorized three Vedas, while Chaturvedis memorized four.

Oral tradition connects various fields of study and remains a living practice today. It is distinct from oral history, which focuses on personal testimony of historical events. It is also different from the study of orality, which looks at how thought is expressed in societies without literacy. Today, oral tradition remains a powerful tool for cultural preservation. For instance, Kenya has taken steps to protect its intangible cultural heritage by joining international conventions. Whether through the music of a modern griot or the sacred chants of a religious ritual, oral tradition keeps the past connected to the present.
