Folk religion refers to various religious expressions that exist apart from organized religious institutions. It includes the customs and beliefs of specific ethnic or regional groups. These practices often fall outside the formal doctrines of major faiths. Scholars in religious studies and folkloristics use this term to describe how people practice faith in their daily lives.

While organized religions often have central leaders and strict rules, folk religion is typically unorganized. It is often described as the religious dimension of folk culture. It can also refer to religious syncretism, which is the blending of different belief systems.

Scholars have developed several ways to understand how folk religion works. Don Yoder, a prominent researcher, proposed five distinct definitions. One view sees folk religion as the survival of older traditions within a newer religious context. For example, some folk traditions in Catholic Europe may stem from pre-Christian beliefs. Another view focuses on syncretism, where an official religion mixes with ethnic religions. This is common in the Americas, where Christianity blended with African and indigenous traditions to create systems like Vodun or Santería.

Yoder also described it as the "folk interpretation" of religion. This means it is the way ordinary people express their attitudes toward the sacred.

Sociologists often contrast folk religion with elite religion. Folk religion originates from sources other than the official leadership of a faith. Its practitioners usually do not form independent religious communities. Instead, they participate in the broader social community. The sociologist Matthias Zic Varul described it as a way to achieve "everyday transcendence." This means it involves unreflected practices that connect people to something beyond the immediate moment.

Some religious leaders may tolerate these practices even if they consider them errors.

The study of folk religion has a long academic history. In Europe, it began with the German concept of "religiöse Volkskunde." A Lutheran preacher named Paul Drews used this term in 1901. He wanted to prepare young preachers for the different religious variations they would find in their congregations. During the 1920s and 1930s, folklorists like Josef Weigert and Max Rumpf studied German peasant communities. Later, scholars like Rudolf Kriss collected large amounts of folk-religious art. These collections are now housed in museums, such as the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Munich.

In the Americas, the field grew through cultural anthropology. Robert Redfield was a pioneer in this area. In his 1930 book, *Tepoztlán: A Mexican Village*, he examined the relationship between official and folk religion in a peasant community. The term "folk religion" also appeared in English through works like Joshua Trachtenberg's 1939 study of Jewish magic. In the United States, professors like Don Yoder at the University of Pennsylvania and John Messenger at Indiana University taught these subjects. However, Yoder noted that many U.S. academics in religious studies focused more on theology than on folk religiosity.

In recent decades, some scholars have moved away from the term "folk religion." Leonard Norman Primiano argued that the term could be seen as derogatory or "residualistic." He suggested that it implies a "pure" religion exists which is then contaminated by human culture. To fix this, he proposed the term "vernacular religion." This term defines religion as it is actually lived and practiced by humans. However, other scholars like Kapaló have cautioned against this change. They argue that switching terms simply changes which parts of the world a scholar chooses to study.

Folk religion manifests in many specific cultural forms. In China, Chinese folk religion includes the veneration of ancestors and the worship of nature. It involves beliefs in a rational order of nature and the use of exorcism.

Some people may not belong to a formal church, yet they still seek religious services. They might request religious weddings, funerals, or baptisms. These actions show how people interact with the sacred outside of formal institutions. This study helps us understand the complex tension between organized systems and the lived experiences of people.
