Folk religion is a way to describe beliefs and practices that are different from large, organized religions.

While major religions often have strict rules and leaders, folk religion grows from the people themselves. It can include customs from a specific region or an ethnic group. Sometimes, it involves the mixing of two different cultures. For example, some beliefs in the Americas blend African traditions with Roman Catholicism. This mixture can create new belief systems like Vodun or Santería. These traditions help people connect to things beyond their daily lives.

Experts have many ways to define how this works. One thinker named Don Yoder suggested several different views. He said it could be the survival of very old traditions from long ago. It could also be the way people interpret and express their faith in their own way. Another view is that it is the interaction of rituals, customs, and myths in traditional societies. Some people see it as the way ordinary people practice religion in their everyday lives. This is often called "lived religion." It is not usually led by a large institution or a central group of leaders.

History shows that many scholars have studied these local traditions. In Europe, the study began with a German term called "religiöse Volkskunde." A Lutheran preacher named Paul Drews used this term in a 1901 article. He wanted to help young preachers understand the different ways people practiced faith in their towns. Later, German scholars like Josef Weigert and Max Rumpf studied peasant communities. In the Americas, a pioneer named Robert Redfield studied a Mexican village in 1930. He looked at how official religion and folk religion worked together in that community.

There are many specific names and groups tied to these beliefs. In China, folk religion includes traditions like ancestor worship and honoring forces of nature. In the United States, scholars like Don Yoder taught these subjects at the University of Pennsylvania. Other experts, such as John Messenger, taught at Indiana University. Some researchers prefer the term "vernacular religion" instead of "folk religion." A scholar named Leonard Norman Primiano suggested this new term in the 1990s. He felt the old term might sound disrespectful to the people practicing these faiths.

Understanding folk religion helps us see how faith works in the real world. It shows that religion is not just about big buildings or holy books. It is also about how individuals and small communities encounter the sacred. Some people might not go to a church or a temple regularly. However, they may still want a religious wedding or a special funeral. They might also want to baptize their children in a specific tradition. These small, local acts are a big part of the human experience. They show how people find meaning in their own unique ways.
